About the data

This public portfolio example uses provider-reported daily adjusted-close history. The VTI and BND annual return totals are independently compared with Vanguard's published 2022–2024 annual fund returns; this corroborates annual return scale, not every daily price. Historical results describe only the period shown; they are not forecasts or investment advice.

Provider data can be unavailable or revised; the provider itself is not independently audited.

Classic 60/40 portfolio

This example uses Yahoo Finance daily adjusted-close history for VTI 60% / BND 40%; yearly rebalance; starting amount USD 100,000. No benchmark comparison is included. Complete selected window: 753 shared observations from 753 observations for each fund; 100.0% of 753 expected US equity sessions from 2022-01-03 through 2024-12-31. Annual return totals are checked against Vanguard's published fund tables; the comparison is not a daily independent price series.

The selected price series are daily adjusted closes; no adjusted-close values were missing and no raw-close fallback was used.

Full assumptions and data notes

Each fund supplied 753 adjusted-close observations on the same dates; all 753 expected US equity sessions in this selected window are present. Annual fee overlay 0 bps; separate expense deduction 0%; inflation adjustment 0%; contributions and withdrawals 0 / 0; cash allocation and yield 0% / 0%; rebalance trading cost 0 bps. These overlays remain zero because dated historical rates were not sourced; zero does not mean the funds had no expenses. Adjusted prices may already reflect fund-level costs. This result is not inflation-adjusted. Common observations are aligned; no forward filling is applied.

Independent annual aggregate check against Vanguard VTI and Vanguard BND published annual total returns (USD; 2022–2024). Yahoo adjusted-close vs Vanguard published returns: 2022 VTI -19.523% / -19.51%, BND -13.112% / -13.12%; 2023 VTI 26.047% / 26.11%, BND 5.654% / 5.70%; 2024 VTI 23.810% / 23.71%, BND 1.383% / 1.36%. Differences up to 0.101 percentage point are disclosed; annual aggregate data do not provide a daily like-for-like price series.

What these terms mean

Annualized return is the average yearly rate over this observed period, expressed as a compound rate. Largest observed fall is the biggest peak-to-trough decline in this history, not a limit on future losses. Shared observations are dates when both holdings had usable prices; the window percentage uses expected trading sessions as a separate denominator.

A result is a chain of custody.

  1. Start with observed history. Check what was supplied, its source, date, price basis, and common coverage.
  2. Separate modeled overlays. Keep rebalancing, stress, resampling, and diagnostics distinct from observations.
  3. Check the boundary. Label forecasts and possible paths as model output, with uncertainty and limitations visible.
